One of the best things about frameless glass is that there are no tracks or frames to trap grime. Keep up a simple routine and it stays clear for years.
The 30-second daily habit
Squeegee after every shower. The NSW Government's advice on shower glass is exactly that: "squeegee the glass after every use." Water spots are left behind when water dries on the glass. Take the water off, and there's nothing left to dry.
While you're there, give the hinges and handle a quick wipe with a dry cloth. The NSW Government also recommends drying hinges after every shower.
The good news for Sydney: our water is generally soft, so mineral spotting is milder here than in many parts of Australia. A squeegee handles most of it.
The weekly clean
For the glass:
- Warm water and a little mild detergent, or a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Glass maker Viridian says that ratio is fine on glass.
- A soft cloth or non-scratch sponge.
- Rinse and squeegee dry.
For the hardware:
- Warm water and a microfibre cloth for chrome and polished finishes.
- Mild soap and warm water for matte, powder coat and brushed finishes.
- Dry it straight away.
Keep vinegar off the hardware. Brodware's care guide tells you to avoid caustics, abrasives, citrus acid, bleach, vinegar and alcohol on tapware finishes. If you're spraying vinegar on the glass, wipe the hardware with plain water afterwards. More on finishes in choosing and caring for hardware.
Never use these on shower glass
From Viridian's cleaning guide and the NSW Government's advice:
- Razor blades or scrapers
- Scouring pads or steel wool
- Abrasive or cream cleansers
- Cleaners containing hydrofluoric or phosphoric acid
Scratches aren't only cosmetic. Damage to the surface of toughened glass can weaken it. See can a shower screen explode?
Seals and silicone
- Door seals collect soap and grime. Wipe them weekly. If they're cracked or stiff, replace them. Seals are cheap.
- Silicone that's gone black with mould won't clean up. The mould is inside it. Cut it out and reseal. See which silicone to use.
- Run the exhaust fan or open a window during and after showers. Mould needs damp air.
What about glass coatings?
Protective coatings for shower glass are sold to make water bead and roll off. Some homeowners swear by them, others find a squeegee does the same job. If you use one, follow the maker's instructions and check it's safe near your hardware finish.
